Being a Christian is the most wonderful thing in the world. It's about coming to faith in the fact that on the cross Jesus took all our guilt and shame upon himself and died on our behalf, exchanging my sinfulness with his perfection and righteousness; exchanging my blindness, hopelessness and enslavement with his freedom and hope and life! Jesus is our Saviour, not just so that we can go to heaven when we die, but so that we can experience the abundant life Jesus gives here and now.
Becoming a Christian is ultimately all a work of God in convincing us of our sin and of our desperate need for him. Here are a few steps that typically happen in a person's life as they come under God's transforming grace in their lives.
- Know that God created you in His image, that He loves you and wants you to be in a relationship with Himself (John 3:16).
- Acknowledge that you are a lost sinner (Rom 3:23) and that you cannot save yourself (Rom 6:23). The bible teaches that all of us are sinners - which basically means that all of us have fallen short of God's standard of perfection and holiness. Even the very best most noble things we do are not good enough to earn God's approval or to balance the scales of our good and bad deeds. Isaiah writes: "All of us have become like one who is unclean, and all our righteous acts are like filthy rags; we all shrivel up like a leaf, and like the wind our sins sweep us away" (Isaiah 64:6).
- Understand that God took the initiative by sending Jesus Christ to die for your sins and He is God’s Way of salvation (John 3:16). Jesus said, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” (John 14:6).
- Repent of your sin (Acts 2:38) and receive God’s free gift of grace (Ephesians 2:8). Repenting literally means to make a u-turn. It's about turning away from one thing and towards something. We need to exchange our old gods (the things we were living for), for the one true God.
- Accepts God’s forgiveness and welcome the Holy Spirit into your life (Acts 2:38-39).
- Accept Jesus Christ as Lord and Saviour of your life.
