How do I tell people about my faith?

When we have found a great holiday spot or destination, we often share the information with others. Similarly, when we've found life in Jesus Christ, we should joyfully share this good news with those who may still be looking and yearning to find the same peace with God.

The following thoughts will assist you as you consider sharing your new-found faith with others.

The importance of sharing your faith with others

  • It’s required by Christ – He commanded us to “make disciples” (Mat 28:19-20).
  • It confirms your belief in Christ. If you really believe that Christ is the Way, you will share it with others.
  • It builds up your own faith. As you share the good news of becoming a Christian with others, you will want to make sure that you life backs up what you say!

The way to share your faith

  • Be sure of your salvation. If you have doubts, talk to a pastor or counsellor about assurance of salvation. You cannot speak to others about something you are not sure about.
  • Let your life speak – your family and friends will notice the difference that Christ has made in your life.
  • Use your own experience of salvation. If you tell people what Christ has done for you, just share the truth with them!
  • Know some basic Scripture verses. Go back to the first chapter on assurance of salvation and make sure you understand and are able to share the basic truths about becoming a Christian.
  • Attend a course offered by the church in helping you share your faith and leading a person to Christ.

The contents of sharing your faith

  • Tell your story. This provides the easiest way of “breaking the ice.” Don’t talk for too long – be brief.
  • Share what God has done through Jesus Christ, namely that He came to die for our sins and that He is the only Saviour. Some of the verses shared earlier will help you understand the Bible’s message.
  • Challenge others by your life and words to give their lives to Christ.

The fear of sharing your faith

  • The Bible confirms that we are not alone (Mat 28:20). Jesus’ promise of His presence comes just after He commanded His disciples to make disciples.
  • God’s Holy Spirit empowers us to do what we cannot do in our own strength (Acts 1:8). Learn to submit to the power and guidance of the Holy Spirit.
  • You cannot save people – only God can. But it is your responsibility to be an instrument in His hands to be used to challenge others with the message of the Good News of Jesus Christ.
