The following questions and answers may help you in understanding the need for joining other Christians in the Body of Christ.
Can I be a Christian on my own?
- On the one hand, your salvation does not depend on others – it depends on God saving you and it is then a personal relationship that you have with God.
- However, your health and growth as a Christian depends on fellowship, sharing, and input into your own life.
Why should I join a church?
It’s Biblical
- It’s assumed in the Scriptures. In the Old Testament individuals became part of the covenant people of God.
- In the New Testament the early church in Jerusalem and other cities set an example of people belonging to the church (see Acts 2:40-47).
- The images of the church used in New Testament, such as “Body of Christ,” “family,” “flock,” and others paint a picture of people belonging to a bigger body.
- Community – I depend on others as they depend on me.
It’s logical
- I need others to support me and they need my support.
- Together we are stronger (Ecclesiastes 4:8-12).
- We hold one another accountable.
What is church all about?
- Together we form the Body of Christ, expressed in the local church where we are members.
- We come together to worship God corporately.
- We learn and grow together in Christ.
- We support and love one another as members.
- We learn how to use our gifts to build one another up.
- We reach out to the world together in missions.
What are the requirements for becoming and being a member?
- You must be a committed Christian.
- You should consider being baptised (Acts 2:41).
- You should participate in Communion (1 Corinthians 11:23-26).
- You must share your time and resources with others.
- You must be regular in attendance and be faithful to God.
How do I get the most out of church membership?
- Join a small group for Bible study, accountability and support.
- Give of your time and money to support God’s work (2 Corinthians 8 & 9).
- Use your gifts to bless others and join a church ministry (Romans 12:3-8).
